How can their engineers be motivated to get out of bed in the morning to work on such a small-minded plan which does nothing more than get us 4 men back on the moon in 13 years?!

and another article

Is This the Right Way to Return to the Moon?
I wonder, then, if the money wouldn't be better spent on things that have a higher likelihood of delivering those, like space elevators. As I mentioned in an earlier column, space elevator technology promises drastically reduced costs to orbit (from which, as Robert Heinlein famously observed, you're halfway to anywhere in the solar system in terms of energy) and it looks as if we could build a working space elevator -- or several -- within the $100 billion pricetag and over the same time frame.

Columbia shoots itself in the foot..

First read this.

At first, it just seemed like the kind of inexplainably bad, head-shakingly inept decision that Columbia administrations are legendary for making. But now, the Athletic Department has taken its stupidity—and I don’t use that word lightly—to a whole new level.

Then read this.

As Saturday’s game with Duquesne approaches, so does Baker Blast, the annual celebration of the first home football game of the season.

Conceived in 1991 by the athletics department as a way to build school spirit, encourage attendance at home football games, and support Columbia sports teams, Baker Blast has traditionally been followed by a night football game. This year, in an effort to boost attendance and student support, the new associate athletic director for sports marketing, Barry Neuberger, has made several changes to the festivities.

Now ask yourself, how a make a school that already has problems with attendence at athletic games can shoot itself in the foot. According to the second article, last year only 2,000 fans showed up to Baker Blast. I would venture to say that 60% were Fraternity members and alumni. Now takes those two groups and alienate them by making it harder to tailgate. Columbia wants to increase attendence. THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO DO IT. This is the way to decrease attendence. Am I going to go? I will probably go to our BBQ, but leave afterward to come back to campus. What fun is it watching your team suck (like only Columbia can suck) while sober. It is much more fun to drink and let the booze fill you with a false sense of hope that your Blue and White might pull it out. I don't really care about Columbia's football team. To me they are only a bunch of guys who are smaller than 90% of the crew team that get 250% more than we do for funding. Before they were a reason to drink and have fun while faking that we were a real football school like VA Tech, BC, or maybe even USC. But now they are a nuisance. This weekend is going to be less like Baker Blast and more like the death knell of Columbia sports.

Link: FHM Complimentary Subscription Form

Want a free subscription to FHM. I have become addicted to
working out. When you work out you create small tears in the muscle
that you are working, millions of tears. Your body releases
endorphines to block the pain caused my these millions of tears. If
you work out with regularity you can become addicted to these
endorphins and a day without them can make you feel depressed and
withdrawn. I have a second workout today but because of class I
can't do it till 530. It is only 330 and I already feel withdrawal.
All I want to do is sit on the erg and pull. 10k (today's workout)
isn't much but it is enough to sate my addiction. At least for 12
hours, before I am back on the water tomorrow morning.

Link: Where is the International Space Station right now?

The international space station is our first feeble attempt to reach the stars, something I think needs to be a big part of our future as humans. We have been to the moon before, back in the fucking 60's (or was it the 50's). Anyways while this is the right move, we need to spend this money wisely. NASA is not really known for its parsimonious spending. We've received some complaints recently from users who assume that this reflects a political bias on our part. I'd like to explain how these results come up in order to allay these concerns.

Google's search results are generated by computer programs that rank web pages in large part by examining the number and relative popularity of the sites that link to them. By using a practice called googlebombing, however, determined pranksters can occasionally produce odd results. In this case, a number of webmasters use the phrases [failure] and [miserable failure] to describe and link to President Bush's website, thus pushing it to the top of searches for those phrases. We don't condone the practice of googlebombing, or any other action that seeks to affect the integrity of our search results, but we're also reluctant to alter our results by hand in order to prevent such items from showing up. Unfortunately we are only going to get three in this week. Bullshit and bullshit keeps getting in our way. Tuesday morning we had a erg test (basically because our coach had a meeting), tomorrow morning we have a eligibility meeting. So out of the possible 5 days of practice this week, we are only on the water for three.

Today our second workout was a 10k. Nothing hard just heart rate stuff. The key to heart rate shit is to do it right, and that is also the hardest part. Why pull 1:58’s when you know you can pull 1:56’s. Well when you pull those 1:56’s your heart rate jumps up 10 beats and your body wears out more and doesn’t have time to recover before your next workout. This leads to over-training and injury.

Link: Curing Obesity through Sterility

Since I took a nap and I usually don't, I am having trouble falling asleep.
Curing Obesity through Sterility: California 's Controversial Program Under the Microscope "Beginning last November, the city of San Francisco began a program whereupon clinically obese men between the ages of 18 and 55 could undergo a procedure whereupon approximately 1/2 an inch is removed from each vas and the ends are sealed - commonly referred to as a vasectomy - completely free of charge. Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have 3 classes in a row. And this morning’s erg test just added to the fun. Not that it is coming to a close I have some fun stuff for all of you. Here are some links and shits….

New York City Parks will become hot-spotted by mid-October—now that summer is over. The heat of the laptop battery will just have to keep me alive while updating Gizmodo from the Central Park zoo, the Delacorte Theater and the Boathouse Cafe in the dead of winter. The free online access, supplied by WiFi Salon, was originally supposed to be in place by this July. But at least it’s not turning into a Madison project

Girl: I don't know who Jim Crow is. How did I manage to pull this off? Well I was up at 6:40 this morning shoveling peanut butter down my throat to make sure my body had fuel for an erg test this morning. We did a 30 min erg test. For anyone who has not ever done one, they are quite different than any other erg test you will do. They are long enough that you can’t bullshit it. I did alright beating my score from last year. After the test I drank some sugary stuff, ate some other stuff, and got right back into bed. 2 hours later I got up again. I have to make it to the cafeteria before my next class, which is at 1:10.

Link: Handheld Thunderbolt Detector

The ThunderBolt is a handheld storm detector capable of providing lightning protection by detecting thunderstorm activity from as far as 75 miles away. Once a storm is detected, it calculates the actual distance in miles and displays warning information on an easy-to-read LCD display. The ThunderBolt then continuously monitors the storm and provides 15-second updates on the distance, approach speed, intensity, and Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) to the user’s exact location.
Read on
This is perfect for crew. Not to keep you off the water but to let you stay on. I know I have been forced to row to the dock and sat there while nothing happened. Other times storms appear out of nowhere. Either way this is a cool piece of technology. I bet it uses static electricity presence in the air or something like that.

Apple and Samsung use illegal business practices to ensure Apple's Media Player Dominance

Samsung has raised the ire of everyone else in the NAND flash marketplace because they offered such a huge volume discount to Apple. One analyst thinks it was as high as 50 percent. This effectively makes it impossible for anyone else to compete on price in the 4GB and 6GB flash player space.

Read on

Basically it comes down to this. Samsung gave apple such a nice price break that no one else can get the same kind of memory for that cheap. That means that all of the Nano's competitors will cost a heap of more money. Do you remember studying kickbacks with railroads back when Rockefeller and Carnegie were the kinds of industry? It can rule your life. Most people's weekends start friday night. Most Columbia student's weekends start thursday night. My weekend does not start until after my workout Saturday morning. This morning I am heading in around 10 to do a 15k. After an hour with my heart rate at 155 my weekend begins.

List of fun things I am going to do on my weekend:
1. get a clothes hamper (left my old one at home)
2. maybe buy Deer Hunter
3. Buy and drink beer
4. Buy and eat salsa

Update on the DVD experiment:
Well Matt and I went into Harlem and bought 40 year old virgin from some dude. For $5 and a nice 20 min stroll we actually go a watchable movie. Caryn, Matt, and I watched it while eating dinner. It was a good movie. Very funny. It would have cost us $42 for all three of us to pay subway fare and the ticket price. The only thing that was missing was the theater feeling. That was ruined by people coming and going from the suite.

Link: How to Help a Friend Who Gets Arrested in the Middle of the Night

Usually there is some good stuff to know.

1. 2 girls is better than 2 guys in an orgy
2. They also bring you Gizmodod (a tech blog) and Fleshbot which is what is sounds like. Anyways they are now bringing you a new cruder ESPN -like sports blog. How are the unique? Here is some stuff from thier FAQ.

2. Why are you doing a blog about sports? Aren’t blogs about Hillary Clinton being a lesbian and Tara Reid drunkenly shoving firecrackers up her nose?

3. What makes you any different from ESPN or SI.com or any other sports site on the web?
Well, first off, unlike a lot of their columnists, we do not pee sitting down. (Except after drinking.) We also are not writing this site as some part of careerist synergy to support our screaming, unhinged appearances on “Around the Horn,” our wacky sitcom with the crazy but lovable neighbors or even our best-seller about imaginary spiritual conversations with our late nana. We are only trying to find and provide sports information on the web in a way that makes you forget, if just for the briefest of seconds, that you have to file that report/duplicate that invoice/fax that cover sheet/fluff that hairless dude.

Take a look. Unfortunately I was wrong about the duration of the lab. Instead of 4 hours it is 5 hours, from 1-6. Looks like I won’t have time to nap on Fridays. Last weekend Matt Dean and I ventured into Harlem to find MarioKart 64. It cost $15 at GameStop and was a worthy purchase. On the way to and from we saw pirated DVDs sold on every corner. I want to buy one and see how it turns out. Instead of paying $25 for Caryn and I to go to the movies we can enjoy it for only $5 in the comforts of my suite.

Conglomeration of stuff

Conglomeration of stuff

Thursdays usually mean the end of the week for Columbia students. I couldn't fix it so I had to reload the OS, which is ok because I backup my files at least once a week. What didn't work so well is that our network is so innundated with viruses (or is it virii?) that while downloading updates my computer was infected and reinfected. I think I ended up reloading the OS like 3 times before I could patch the computer before it became infected yet again. FUN. Ok well now the Creek is back.

Today I was walking from the cafeteria to my class when I happened across an oddity. I am pretty sure that most colleges and high schools have been having classes for some time. Gonzaga always started before labor day. Even my elementary school started before labor day. Columbia is a little behind in the times. We start tomorrow the day after labor day. And what is the price we pay for starting this late. I won’t be home for Christmas Break until the 23rd. Yes that is right. I think it is ridiculous. I will have one day off before Christmas. During high school I had a week off before and now I only have a day.

Today is pretty laid back. I am going to the gym at 1 and have some other stuff to do. I can’t register for the extra classes I need till tomorrow after 1. We also have a crew meeting at 7 o’clock. Mike will then tell us when we get to get out on the water. Ok I am off to eat some rice. I took a
good deal of time off this summer to travel, Boston, NYC, Vienna, Germany,
and Michigan. I am ready to head back to school and row. I am not ready
for classes.

Yesterday the humidity was tolerable and it made my workout so much
easier. I hope it holds out for today.

I had no gas in my car which I only need for another day. So I went to the
station, where gas costs $3.69 a gallon. Fucking ridiculous. I put in 5
dollars worth, which got me 1.3 gallons. Just enough to go about 30 miles.
George Bush is doing a horrible job. Don't give me that bullshit about him
not being responsible for our economy. He is more singly responsible than
any other man, except maybe Allan Greenspan. Piece of shit motherfucker
(Bush not Greenspan). I am getting to dislike him all the more and I am
stuck with his ass for another 3 years because my fellow american is too
stupid to think for himself. He has to get caught up in the righteousness
of the Republican party. <sarcasm> Abortion is not ok. BUT capital
punishmen is. A city that was once known for boozing and partying is now at the mercy of complete fucking idiots. Why do people cause trouble when they are already fucked. Evacuation of the Superdome was halted because of gunfire and arson. It is unbelievable. They are stupider than anyone could imagine. Why should we send a relief effort when they are going to get shot at and attacked. Another thing. I read somewhere that they are blaming the collapse of the levies on the Iraqi war. Someone is claiming that money that should have been spent on reinforcing the levies was spent on the war. America is falling apart and President Bush is too stupid to know what to do. Gas prices have skyrocketed. They jump by 60 cents in the span of 48 hours. Don’t say I didn’t tell you. The economy suffered under Bush’s first 4 years and it is going to be suffering for another 3 till we get this dolt out of office.

A couple things

I leave for New York on Saturday that gives me just under two days before
I head back to school. This summer has been a decent one. No huge bummers
except maybe the mixup at Thompson's Boat Center, but what can I expect,
that place is run like a madhouse. I did a lot of traveling and although I
am ready to head back to Columbia and see my freinds I am not too keen on
starting school. 3 of the 5 classes I registered for in the spring got
canceled. So I have to find some more classes. The Comp Sci department's
offerings are a little skimpy this semester. Right now I have Chemistry
Lab, Computer Networks, and Linear Algebra. I could pick up Advanced
Operating Systems and maybe a research project. Hopefully it will all work
itself out.

Another 10k today, but at least the humidity is supposed to have dropped
despite us not getting any rain from Katrina. Last night he also wore ear plugs to keep out the boos of the Blue Jays fans. I don’t care what you say cheating is cheating. And when you lie to everybody in the US and then get caught red handed you are guilty. I agree with Frank Robinson who said that his record should be wiped clean. All of his states, all 3000 of his hits, should not count. He is a cheater and should be treated as such. It used to be in rowing that if you got caught doping you were banned for life. Now you only get a 2 year suspension. This changed because rowing wanted to join WADA (World Anit-Doping Agency) and anyone who joins has to take their standards. So instead of a life ban you only get a 2 year suspension. Why is it that Lance Armstrong is being hounded by a bunch of fucking crazy French tabloid papers, while Palmeiro gets off with a wrist slap. He should be sent to Federal Pound Me in the Ass Prison.

Humidity sucks ass

Yesterday I probably sweated away more body weight than I have ever
before. The radio
isn't bad for erging but commercials suck and I hate erging to Dave
Matthews (which DC101 always seesm to play when I am on the
machine).

Stop, Think, you know evolution makes sense.

Read this article, laugh, and then think how stupid some people are to think that God opened us up like a watch and tinkered with our insides until it worked.

NYtimes article

Stuff and Shit

I did a 10k today. It is 90 degrees out as well as being about 100% humidity. I persisted and finished the workout. I sweated like I have never before. I drank a whole liter of water during and directly after the workout. Some dude was walking up the street as I was finishing up the workout. It turned out he rowed at John Hopkins back in the 90s and his close friend rowed at Columbia. I am ridiculously spent. I am supposed to be going to the batting cages later with Cat but Tony is over here waiting for her to show up so they can go to the dog park with their giant dogs. It is actually a lot of fun going to the park with them. Logan and Kali (the dogs) romp around and cause general havoc. They play in the water and chase each other.

Link: Get the Nationals on TV

If you are a Nationals fan and going away to college this means that you will never see the Nationals on TV (except when they play the Braves ). I am watching After the Sunset and enjoying it quiet a bit. But that is beside the point. This post is really hard to focus on because the movie is fucking funny. Back on topic. I want to go camping this Thanksgiving and seeing as you need a permit to camp in a Federal Park our only real option is the George Washington or Thomas Jefferson National Forests, where it is legal to camp without a permit. The TJ forest is to far away so the GW forest is the only option left. It is a 2 hour drive west. We would then hike into the back country. Here is a map (flash required) of the two forests. I need to order a map of the country we would be headed to so that we don’t get lost. Either way. As rugged as you want to be you still have to be responsible this entails:

A map

Water

Good friends and libations

Warm clothing (it is going to be November)

Tools (hatchet, maybe a saw, a sharp knife, definitely matches)

Food

Food is the harder part. Having been a boyscout I did a lot of camp cooking. Good things to bring: no dairy, meat, potatoes, bread, Peanut Butter, Jelly. Junk food is easy to pack and eat while camping but although I am not a health food nut (I think natural Peanut Butter is for stupid people) Doritos and Coke just ain’t my thang.

A Link and A Thanks

I found this life expectancy test online. This is bascially
because they are no longer exciting. They went from first in the NL East
to last. They are "still" in the wild card race but so is everybody else
in the NL East. This huge slide coming from the team that went on a 12
game winning streak earlier in the season is disheartening. BUT

They still have out-preformed absolutely everybodys expectations. I
expected them to get hammered in the NL East, not be 2.5 games out of
first. I think all credit is due to Frank Robinson. He has turned the
crappy Expos into a competitor. Our pitching has been much better than
expected. Workhorses like Loaza and Hernadez did what they are paid to do
(and paid well) while new comers like Patterson who make less than 10% of
what Hernadez makes stepped up to the proverbial plate and delivered.
While Wilkerson was dominate in the beginning of the season he now leads
the MLB in strike outs. Guzman just shows us that he can suck more than
we ever thought possible. With a batting average around .190 and fielding
errors the norm, he should be lynched. He is stealing from our pockets.

Just talking about this gets me angry. Fuck Guzman. Go Nationals.

Link: And I thought my mom was meddlesome

This takes things to a new level. With this in mind I didn’t work out. Tomorrow I am going to start working out again. This week it is 10k’s straight through. I leave for college next Saturday and I will be working till Friday. I have to go shopping for some clothes and stuff. I also have started to pack but I am a long way from done. I am ready to head back and hang out with my friends but I am not ready to go back to classes. I am also ready to go back to working out full time. Some seriously funny shit went down this weekend and I will update you on this funny shit later.

Mornings and Buffalo Wings

Mornings

Mornings are definitely not my strong suit. I woke up at the ride hour this morning after getting 8.5 hours of sleep and I was still tired and groggy. I would say it takes a good 20 minutes for me to wake up and gain just 10% of my normal operating faculties.

Last night I went to the batting cages and sucked it up royally. JT McGrath and his sister Katie, who I actually went to elementary school with back during the time of the dinosaurs, went to go his some balls. JT and I went to the fast pitch cage while Katie went to the slow softball cage. JT did real well despite not having hit in awhile. On the other hand I fucking sucked. I missed all 16 of my first pitches. I don’t know why I was just slow.

Anyway I am done with my cocoa puffs so now I have to go to work. We order buffalo wings on Friday for lunch. We will see how that works with my 10k erg workout this afternoon. I am thinking that it won’t.

Various Things

Various Things

Sometimes I have a whole lot of various things that pop in my head during the day. They are usually not related but just come. I was watching Necessary Roughness and noticed that the dude, Jason Bateman, from Arrested Development was in it. It is a good movie, it was better when I was younger and movies were all around crappier. These days it is not that good just decent.

During my erg piece I had some weirdo thought about computer science stuff but I am not going to put it up because I don’t think anyone would really be interested or understand.

Today

Not much today either. I think I am going to the batting cages later with
JT. It is real cool outside, a chilly 65 this morning. It is usually
around 71 at this point and 88 by around 4 when I erg. Today is only a 5k
so I can let my heart beat climb up to around 165.

Stupid story of the day:
I woke up and looked at my alarm clock and it read 34. I usually set my
alarm for 30, so I thought maybe I forgot to set it and now I am late. I
went downstairs showered, dressed, ate breakfast and made my lunch. After
I finished making my 3 ham and hot sauce sandwhiches I look at the clock
and it says 7:07. I think, "It must be an hour behind." Upon inspection of
other clocks I find out that my alarm had read 6:34 not 7:34. I had gotten
up a whole hour early. No wonder I was more tired than usual. Well, that
means I only got 6.5 hours of sleep last night. Not enough. This has
happened once before this summer. I am so out of it in the morning I can't
even tell time.

Link: A Very Familiar Accusation

Lance Armstrong has been accused nearly a hundred times of doping and cheating his way to winning the tour. All but one allegation has been from the French, those chickenshit bastards who when the Nazis knock on thier door said, "I surrender." They whole French nation needs to grow a pair of testicles and admit they got beat at thier own game. The following is quoted from Michael Wilbon's Washington Post article. He makes excellent points but I will always believe Lance didn't cheat. If it ever turned out he did I would be wrecked.

So, here we are again, at the point where we're expected to choose who we believe. We did this with Jose Canseco when he wrote his juice-and-tell book. We did this with Rafael Palmeiro when he told Congress, while pointing for dramatic emphasis, that he never took steroids -- only to test positive for steroids weeks later.

Clearly, the great majority of Americans want to believe Armstrong. Because it's not at all flattering and actually skeeves women out by telling some girl that she has "great legs baby", what does that accomplish?<br>Seriously. It just makes the girl want to run away. Get a life or go jack off by yourself! It's something I hate. Guys always making comments. "How'd you get that nice looking stomach?" They just introduced a AIM competitor, Google Talk. So far as I can tell it is exactly the same. You just need a GMail account to use it. I haven't had anytime to play with it but I will when I get home today.

In other news. Nothing much is going on. I head back to school a week from Saturday and I really should start packing. I have started to pack but just haphazardly putting stuff to one side that I want to take to college. I am a notoriously late packer. I usually don't until I absolutely have to.

Either way, I have also been looking online at hunting knives. Don't ask me why but I have. It seems that you can get some really really expensive ones (upwards of $1,000). Why they are so expensive I have no clue. But you can also get some HUGE cheap ones, like a 13 inch knife (with about a 10 inch blade) for around $15. Obviously the quality has something to do with it, but I don't think I need a $1000 knife or a 13 inch knife for that matter. It would probably be easier to just go to a knife store.

Bloggity Blog Blog

Bloggity Blog Blog

Well another day another dollar they say. Kids getting cut from teams are complaining more and more. 95% of the kids that get cut from a team suck, the other 5% could be on the team but there just isn't room and someone else is just better. I have had two different experieces with getting cut. The being on the wrong side and the being on the right side. When I was a Junior at Gonzaga I didn't make the Varsity team. I played for 2 years on the JV. It is kind of hard to remember how I felt all those 5 years ago. I know it hurt then but I didn't act like a fag and complain and write a goddamn newspaper story about it. I sacked up and played basketball for one more season, then quit to try crew. At crew I was on the other end of the deal. I saw a bunch of kids who at least showed up for practice get the axe. Some of them deserved it, some just weren't good enough, some I would have liked to see not get cut. But life ain't a fucking whatever. Coaches who say they don't like making cuts are the kind of coaches I would not want to play for (sorry I know it is incorrect to finish a sentence with a preposition). Either way, here is my message to the kids of today.
Fucking sack up. Work was not horrible and when I got home I did a 10k. All 10,000 meters, in all it’s glory. And it when slow, real slow. The good news is I am started down that path and I will only get faster. That was the start.

The finish is the antlers. The wood panel, plaque, and hanger all came. It cost be around 8 bucks total. I mounted the antlers to the wood panel. I took the bus roundtrip. The ride up was not a hassle at all, the ride back was a different matter altogether. I arrived at Port Authority Bus Station at 12:20 and asked what gate Washington, D.C. was, “Gate 71, 12:30 bus.” I thought “Excellent” I might make the early bus. FUCK NO. I got to the area and found a line that snaked around the whole concourse, everybody in line for DC. I stood in line for an hour before getting on the 1:30 bus. The ride back was uneventful. I read a lot and almost fell asleep before Caryn called me.

That is just about the ride back though. Up in NYC I did a lot. Caryn and I went over to the East Side to have dinner with some family friends who were visiting their son, who lives in the city. After that we headed up to Columbia to hang out with some friends of mine who stayed in the city for the summer. They were heading out to a part on Central Park South but we just headed back to Caryn’s apartment and passed out. We were up mildly early and walked around the neighborhood. She lives on 81st street which is near 2 movie theaters and a bunch of retail stores. We went to the Natural History Museum for the afternoon and enjoyed staring at large stuffed mammals from all over the world. After that ended up drinking pitchers at a bar near Caryn’s place with Ted, a good Columbia friend of mine. We made it through 5 pitchers before stumbling home and stuffing out faces full of leftovers. Ted passed out on the couch as Caryn and I made it a little bit farther to her bed.

Up in the NYC

Well I got up here after about a 5 hour bus ride in which I enjoyed a
couple of good books. The bus was pretty much empty with about 18 people
for 58 seats. Greyhound is totally worth the extra 5 bucks. The chinatown
bus is 30 round trip and is always packed. The greyhound is 35 round trip
and almost never packed. If it is they usually send another bus. Yesterday
we went to dinner with some of Caryn's family freinds. We went to a
upscale mexican restaurant called Rosa Mexicano. It was good. I asked the
waiter which beer to order, not being familiar with Mexican beers. I mean
I know Corona and Dos Equis but beyond that I don't know much. He
recommended the Pacifico and by God was he right. It was an excellent
beer. I ended up getting the stacked tortilla (spelling?) with shredded
chicken. It was very filling.

After which we headed up to Columbia to hang out with some of my freinds I
haven't drank with in awhile. But the fact is that nothing really has happened that is worth writing about. Tomorrow I got up to NYC to see Caryn. I have a lot of stuff to do at home and I am kind of sick of traveling but I haven’t seen her in 2 weeks and it will be another 2 weeks till I would get to see her. My orders are also supposed to come in tomorrow, but with my luck they won’t arrive till after I have left. I ordered a really cool knife from Overstock.com and stuff to mount my antlers with from VanDyke’s Taxidermy. I’ll be back in NOVA on Sunday night.

Overplayed

When I was in elementary school I once thought to myself, music is ok but
what is the big deal. All my freinds were heavy into Nirvana and Pearl Jam
and other stuff. I didn't really get into music until I had a car. I spend
90% of my music listening time in the car. A couple of days ago I wrote a
post about the relatively new System Of A Down CD. Since then I have
listened to it multiple times and its appeal is starting to wane. I need a
new CD to listen to. Tool hasn't come out with a new CD in 4 years.
Eminem's latest CD didn't live up to his earlier works. The Foo Fighters
CD is decent but not great.

Erg Stories

Erg Stories

I was sitting on the erg today trying to keep my mind focused on the task at hand in the 90 degree heat. I failed at this task just long enough to think of some of the other times I had “odd” erg experiences. Here are some:

1. While I was attending the College of William and Mary, we didn’t have a real crew team let alone an erg room. Instead we had our ergs in the basement of the rec center. Down there it was cold cement and pain. I spent a lot of time in that basement by myself. Some kind soul had donated a shitty ass stereo. One night after dinner I was down there doing an hour of power. About 40 into it the CD starts to skip. The boombox is about 15 feet away and I am pulling a decent split, getting up is the last thing I want to do. I spent the next 20 minutes erging to a skipping CD. Hell could have a room where the CD skips forever and you can never get to the stereo to skip the track. Next time I sat down I put a bucket of tennis balls next to me. With 40 minutes to go the CD starts to skip again. On the recovery I pick up a tennis ball and hurl it at the boombox. After about 5 strokes, 5 tennis balls, and 1 hit the CD no longer skipped. And the boombox had a dented left speaker.

2. Over this past Christmas I wanted to keep my training up. This meant 10-15k daily. While I was erging in garage in freezing temperatures, my little brother would be asleep till about 3 in the afternoon from hard partying. I would have had breakfast, worked out, eaten lunch, and showered before he would be awake.

3. During this past school year some days we had some pretty high volume days. The heaviest days I did were 30k. I would get up at 6 in the morning to get a 15k in before the girls team (who gaggle like geese even at 7 am in the morning) would show up for erg practice. I would do a 15k, go to class, eat lunch, take an hour to do random stuff, and head back to the erg room for another 15k. Sitting in the erg room those cold winter mornings knowing I would be back in about 8 hours was fun.

4. One day in the middle of a 20k, I looked into the wall to wall mirrors we have and Bryan Volpenhein was staring back. Weirdest moment by far.

I know I have one more but I can’t remember it right now….and I have to set the table.

The Usual

The Usual

Today has been pretty usual. We bought a lot of meat, and I mean a lot.
We also purchased some stuff for going back to college, like a 5 pound tub
of cookie dough. Yes that is right, 5 pounds of delictable cookie dough. I
know what you are thinking, that I am going to eat it raw before I even
leave for college, but I can assure that that is not going to happen. I
have some self-discpline.

To change topics, I read an article yesterday talking about how ridiculous
PETA has become. The president of PETA, some self-serving wench, wrote a
letter to Yasir Arrafat (back when he was alive) decrying the use of a
donkey in a recent suicide bombing. It seems the donkey was laden with
explosives and and sent somewhere to explode. It seems that this PETA
president would rather laden humans with explosives than a stupid ass ass.
Either way, PETA is retarded.

Link: Family Guy Blog

Here is a great idea.
